Organic products - fashion or necessity?
Phrase "organic production "is not so long a household name. Is it a fashionable tendency or a need dictated by the current day? Why people more often choose organic food?
Label "an organic product" means that this product:
• does not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), GM foods and their derivatives;
• does not contain chemically synthesized preservatives, dyes, fragrances, stabilizers and thickeners;
• is produced without the use of harmful technologies (ultrasonic treatment, chemical preservation, processing phenols and surfactants, nuclear fission and radiation treatment, aeration);
• does not contain raw materials of agricultural origin which has been grown up with use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers and other agricultural chemistry, hormones and growth factors;
• does not contain raw materials of the agricultural origin which has been grown near industrial centers.
European roots of "ORGANIC"
The concept called organic has originated in the 20's of last century in parallel in Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It was based on the need to protect the environment and improve the quality of agricultural products. Farmers who practice this approach relied primarily on the old tradition of family farms, denying intensive methods that require excessive use of various chemicals. Organic agriculture found more or less official status in the forties of the last century when the first-ever certifying organization "Soil Association" uniting a number of farms in England was established.
Other concept of careful attitude to agricultural resources called "biodynamic" was offered by German Rudolf Steiner in 1924. It is based on the respect for environment and human health.
Therefore now the production grown without pesticides, mineral fertilizers, GMO, growth factors labled according to the law as "organic" n the English-speaking countries, in Germany – "BIO", in Sweden, Spain and other countries as "ekologic".
The confirmed status
Now the organic status of production is confirmed by the corresponding certificate according to EU law "About organic production of agricultural raw materials" No. 2092/91. Organic raw materials for the manufacture of organic products come from certified lands. On such land plot for 3 years it is forbidden to bring any productss of a chemical origin. Each production phase of organic products is certified and strictly supervised. Fields and pastures used for maintaining animal husbandry have to receive the organic status. Cows giving organic milk must walk in open pastures, which also obtain a certificate that pesticides, dioxin and other chemicals cannot pass into milk or meat.
The price is justified
Organic and natural products are 50-100% more expensive than usual: because of extensive conducting ecoproduction cause reduction of yields up to 2-3 times, besides monthly and annual obligatory control of the certifying organizations cost a lot for the company.
