An apple a day keeps the cancer away

Apples have been known to be very nutritious. If organically grown, all the vital health benefits are located right under the skin of the apple. If conventionally grown all the detrimental pesticides, herbicides and cancer causing sulfites are located right under the skin of the apple.

So, should you choose to eat a conventionally grown apple, you must peel the skin off the apple first and just eat the flesh of the apple, which contains very little nutritional value.

That being said, whatever color of apple you choose, as long as it was organically grown, is extremely beneficial health wise.

Organic apples are one of the most perfect health foods you can eat. They contain a very filling and satisfying type of fiber, which helps with weight control. They also have several powerful nutrients that truly will "keep the doctor away" when consumed on a regular basis.

Pectin

The fiber that is found abundantly in apples is called pectin. This type of fiber is beneficial to your overall health in several ways. Pectin has demonstrated an ability to help lower cholesterol levels. It has also demonstrated a blood sugar stabilizing effect. It has been linked to a lower likelihood of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes.

This also has the effect of reducing the appetite and making one feel fuller longer. Organic apples are an excellent snack for this reason. They register at about 50-80 calories depending on their size, so they have minimum impact on your daily caloric intake. Although pectin can kill up to 40% of cancer cells, it does not kill healthy cells.

Quercetin

Apples are rich in a potent antioxidant and flavonoid called quercetin. Quercetin is a potent anti-inflammatory and natural antihistamine. It is therefore considered an excellent nutrient for cancer and heart disease prevention as well a potent anti-allergy nutrient.

Studies have shown that children who consume apples frequently have lower rates of asthma. This furthers the theory that quercetin is a powerful natural histamine blocker. Consuming apples on a regular basis may also help improve allergy symptoms in adults.
In Hawaii, yet another study was done that found that people who ate more apples and onions - both being high in quercetin - had a lower risk of lung cancer.

Polyphenols

Apples also contain a potent antioxidant group of nutrients called polyphenols. Polyphenols are mostly known for their presence in red wine and green tea, and apples are a little known source of this powerful nutrient. The polyphenols that are found in apples are different from other sources of this nutrient in that they are water soluble.

This increases their bioavailability making them an excellent source of this beneficial compound. Diets high in polyphenols are associated with lower cancer rates, better heart health and enhanced immune function.

Many of the strongest and most beneficial polyphenols are contained in the skin of the apple. So when eating an apple, eat the entire fruit and don't peel the skin if you want maximum nutritional benefit.

The exceptional polyphenol content combined with the pectin also helps lower blood fat levels. This benefit has only been observed when whole apples are regularly consumed. At least one whole apple per day must be eaten to gain this effect.

Oligosaccharides

According a new research in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules regarding cancer Scientists at Fourth Military Medical University, School of Pharmacy in China found that an oligosaccharide in apples showed impressive results when used with human colon cancer cells.

Oligosacharides are actually complex carbohydrates. The results of the research proved that the more apple oligosaccharides are present, the better the results that people could get against cancer cells in the colon. The compound was found to initiate a process that is called apoptosis, which is considered as cellular suicide. This is the body's natural mechanism to kill cancerous or damaged cells. By increasing the amount of apple oligosaccharide in the body, the rate at which the cancerous cells commit this cellular suicide can actually be beneficial to someone who has the disease. The findings also showed that apple oligosaccharide actually helped in stopping the formation of new cancer cells.

Because of this study, the researchers were able to conclude that apple oligosaccharide has a lot of potential as a chemoprevention agent or as an anti-tumor agent. They say that these findings make it worthy to be studied further. However, experts recommend that people only stick with organic apples. Apples that are grown non-organically usually contain residues of various chemicals, such as pesticides. These pesticides have been found to be toxic in a lot of studies, especially targeting the nervous system and brain of humans. Many pesticides are also considered as carcinogens. This is why people are discouraged from buying non-organic apples. Organic apples are free of these pesticides, which make them the healthier choice.

Apples are also known to contain high levels of malic acid, which is helpful in improving energy production in the body. This compound is also important to those who have chronic fatigue syndrome. This is also helpful for those who have other disorders that disrupt cellular energy. Apples contain a lot of important minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. This is why people should heed the findings of this study and eat an organic apple a day, to help their bodies become stronger and cancer-free.
