Traditional medicine recipes for the common cold

Cowberries, cranberries, currants, elderberries and raspberries are the well-known folk remedies for the common cold. They stimulate the antibody response and comprise anti-inflammatory substances that help cure the cold effectively.

Like citrus fruits, these berries are rich with vitamin C essential for supporting our immune system during illness. It’s crucial to replenish the ascorbic acid supply in time, because fever causes a massive loss of ascorbic acid. In case of the common cold or sore throat it’s recommended to drink tea with any of the said berries with honey as a soothing measure. It’s important to consume berries not only during illness but also as a preventive measure. 

Cranberries

Cranberry juice is recommended as an antipyretic measure; it also helps improve immunity, quench thirst and facilitates removal of toxins accumulated during illness. 

Once boiled cranberries lose their healing qualities; that’s why It’s not recommended to make cranberry kompot or jam. To make cranberry juice crush 2 tablespoons of berries with a blender, add 1 cup of cold boiled water, stir and drink the whole portion 15 minutes before eating. Cranberry juice mixed with honey helps clearing throat, fight against angina and soothes a sore throat. Mix 2 tablespoons of honey and cranberry juice, stir the mixture and drink ½ cups 2 or 3 times a day.

Cold and flu tea is usually taken with honey and lemon if you’re not allergic to them. It’s crucial to be cautious so as not to cause harm. 

Cowberries

Cowberries contain ascorbic acid, carotene, manganese and kalium. Cowberry juice is effective against fever due to its anti-inflammatory and uretic qualities that prevent germs from developing and help your body get rid of the toxins. 

Mix 50 g of berry juice with 150 g of cold boiled water, add sugar and honey. Take 100 g 3 or 4 times a day after eating.

Cowberry water is also used to sooth joint pains and for gargling in case of angina. Cowberry juice is recommended for hypertensive disease, improves appetite and helps fight against low-acid gastritis as an astringent remedy for stomach and intestine illnesses. 

Blueberry

Blueberries are not only tasty and beautiful but also very healthy. The basic and the most important blueberries quality is its positive effect on our digestive system; blueberries normalize digestion, which helps in case of constipation or diarrhea. Blueberry juice has antibacterial effect and is used to treat urogenital tract inflammation and nephritis. Eating blueberries, high in antioxidants, can lower the risks of cardiovascular disease, blood-clotting and myocardial infraction.

Blueberries are rich in vitamins B, C and P, contribute to eye retina regeneration and improve blood circulation, which explains the positive effect on our sight. People from northern countries drink tea with blueberry water to fight against the common cold, sore throat and headache. Advanced research of blueberry healing qualities shows that blueberries restore many functions of our body and effectively delay aging process. Blueberry cold tea is recommended for improving visual acuity.

Crush berries in a mincer or mixer; add 1L of cool boiled water and ½ cup of honey to the mixture. Store the mixture in a fridge. Carrot juice can be added to improve the effect. It’s recommended to drink a cup of blueberry tea daily.

Hot blueberry tea sooths eye fatigue. It’s better to drink this tea before going to bed or especially after working on a computer. Crush 2 tablespoons of berries, put them in a teapot and add 2 or 3 peppermint leaves. Pour hot boiled water into the teapot and let the tea draw for 15 min.

The tea turns out better if prepared in chinaware. Also, hot blueberry tea has a calming effect.
